Gynecomastia is a condition that causes large, swollen male breasts. Although it’s benign and caused by a hormonal imbalance, it can be extremely distressing for men who are affected by the condition.

What is gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a special form of male breast reduction surgery that is designed to minimize the appearance of enlarged breasts and restore a flat and masculine chest. If necessary, the procedure can also involve resizing and repositioning an enlarged or drooping nipple and areola.

Am I a candidate?

The ideal candidate for a Marina del Rey male breast reduction has enlarged breasts that have not changed in several months, which indicates that the condition has stabilized. If you are in good general health and close to your ideal weight, and diet and exercise have not helped to improve the appearance of your breasts, gynecomastia surgery may be the answer you’ve been searching for.

Cost of a male breast reduction

Your personal investment will vary depending on the experience of your surgeon and your geographical location. Additional costs will also be involved, including:

  • Anesthesia
  • Facilities
  • Medical tests
  • Post-surgery compression garments
  • Medications

The procedure

Your Marina del Rey male breast reduction will be done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the technique used. There are two main options for gynecomastia surgery:

  • Liposuction. If your breasts are composed primarily of fatty tissue, liposuction may be all that’s necessary to remove the excess volume. During this procedure, Dr. Macias will create several small incisions in your breasts. He will insert a small, thin tube (cannula) through those openings, gently moving it back and forth to break up and remove the unwanted fat.
  • Excision. If your breasts are large due to glandular development and/or you have excess skin that must be removed, the excision approach will be necessary. During this procedure, Dr. Macias will create incisions around the border of the areola and along the natural creases of your chest. Through those openings, he will can remove excess tissue and reposition the nipple and areola.

All of Dr. Macias’s plastic surgeries are tailored to the patient’s needs. As such, he may recommend a custom approach that blends liposuction and excision if he believes it’s necessary to achieve your ideal results.

FAQ Gynecomastia

Can non-surgical treatments improve gynecomastia?

Not usually. Weight loss can help some men, but if you’re already close to your ideal weight, generally surgery is necessary to improve the issue.

Are the results permanent?

In most cases, gynecomastia surgery only needs to be performed once. Most of our patients are able to maintain their results moving forward.

Can other procedures be performed at the same time?

Yes! Many of our Marina del Rey patients combine their male breast reductions with other procedures, such as rhinoplasty and liposuction.
