The Procedure

There are two primary approaches to inverted nipple repair. Both are done under local anesthesia, which means you will be awake but unable to feel any discomfort during the procedure.

Dr. Macias' most common approach is a milk duct preserving technique which involves creating a small incision along the bottom border of the nipple and shaping a protruding nipple and areola mound using stitches. This preserves your future breastfeeding abilities by keeping the milk duct system mostly intact and undisturbed.

The most common technique performed by other docotors involves creating an incision along the border of the nipple and detaching the milk ducts, which allows the nipple to protrude, but it will interfere with future breastfeeding.

Inverted nipple repair is associated with a very quick recovery period. Most of our Marina del Rey patients are back to work and their normal daily activities same day. There will be a low profile stent in place for a week to protect the nipple, which will be removed at one week. Some discomfort and swelling may persist for two weeks. You will need to avoid the gym and any strenuous activities until your nipples have fully healed.
