Understanding the Different Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures

By Dr. Luis Macias

If you’re unhappy with the size, shape, or overall appearance of your nose, you’re certainly not alone. If you’re in this situation, you may consider undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure to make certain adjustments to your nose and improve your self-confidence. However, before you can achieve a new nasal appearance, you’ll need to decide which type of rhinoplasty is the best choice for you. Here, we’ll take a look at the most popular types of rhinoplasty procedures.

Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty is the most popular type of rhinoplasty procedure. During this type of nose job, Dr. Macias makes tiny incisions inside the nose, which means that there’s no visible scarring after the surgery. After making the incisions, the doctor gently lifts the soft nasal tissue to access the bone and cartilage of the nose. This allows him to make the needed adjustments to the nasal structure. A closed rhinoplasty is a common choice for patients who need only small adjustments to the structure of their nose. This type of rhinoplasty is also less invasive than most other rhinoplasty procedures.

Open Rhinoplasty

If you need relatively extensive work done on your nose, an open rhinoplasty may be the best option. During an open rhinoplasty, Dr. Macias makes small incisions between the nostrils and directly underneath the nose. He then lifts the skin to gain access to the inside of the nasal cavity, which allows him to reshape the underlying structure of the nose. This type of rhinoplasty is often used for patients suffering from significant nasal issues, such as structural deformities due to genetics or severe trauma.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a special type of rhinoplasty meant for patients who are unsatisfied with the results of a previous nose job. This procedure is typically focused on correcting previous nasal adjustments to improve the appearance of the nose. A revision rhinoplasty can also be performed to correct breathing problems caused by complications after a previous rhinoplasty.

Filler Rhinoplasty

Also known as a liquid rhinoplasty, a filler rhinoplasty is a non-surgical alternative to other types of nose jobs. This non-invasive procedure is performed with the use of dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm or Restylane. The chosen fillers are injected into the nose to improve nasal proportions, shape, and/or symmetry. The main downside to this type of rhinoplasty is that the results are not permanent; typically, they last for between six months and two years.

Tip Plasty

For patients who only desire adjustments to the tip of their nose, a tip plasty can be a wonderful option. A tip plasty procedure is less invasive than most other types of rhinoplasties and requires a relatively short recovery period. During a tip plasty, a small incision is made in the skin between the nostrils. After that, adjustments are made to the cartilage of the nasal tip to improve its shape and definition.
